“Why is a US-based company building a Rwandan headquarters?” The three company founders are from different parts of the world and are quite diverse, so the answer to this question will be different for each of us. I will speak for just myself here.
The easy answers are the obvious size and untapped nature of the African market; the quality of business environment Rwanda offers; and the fresh canvas for new innovation which Africa presents. Beyond these are much deeper personal motivations:
I first came to Rwanda pre-wired with a deep and sincere desire to help people. I also came with a very naïve set of beliefs, which I am a bit embarrassed to share – but I need to say it anyway. In 2013 I thought I was “bringing hope to Rwanda.” I assumed I carried some kind of special wisdom from the developed world that I would impart on the poor people of Rwanda, permanently improving their lives. Wow – how incredibly wrong I was! I have since learned a great deal about the world and about myself, and I am here to humbly report that I do not carry any special wisdom or hope – but, instead, I have found those things already in abundant supply within the people of Rwanda.
I now look around at my Rwandan family and friends, and the everyday people whom I encounter, and I see intelligent, talented, motivated human beings. I see people who are eager for an opportunity to use their talents to build a good life for themselves and to develop their beautiful homeland according to their own Rwandan vision. With this in mind, I re-evaluated what my role can or should be – if any role at all.
I believe most human beings would prefer to have a job and a purpose, versus surviving on charity. Donations play a vital role in saving lives and filling gaps in crucial areas – but over the long term, self-sufficiency is what nurtures dignity, self-worth, and a sustainable culture. I know I have the ability to create businesses and good jobs for people. I have a background in startup companies that focus on technology development and vehicle design/manufacturing. I also have a background in teaching people and training them with new skills. I think I can bring this know-how to Kigali and help create meaningful jobs that can allow thousands of people to support themselves and their families with the dignity that every human being deserves.
Additionally, with the specific area of technology we’re engaged in with Vuba (automated Smart City mobility) I think we can help Kigali become a gleaming symbol of innovation and prosperity for Africa and for the entire modern world. This seems to be well-aligned with H.E. President Kagame’s vision for the country, so I truly believe we have all the elements and support to lead us to great success.
